Notes for Jane McLENNAN
Jane McLennan married Roderick McLennan in Scotland. He died in Scotland and she (Jane) brought her family to Canada in 1849. They spent six weeks on the boat crossing the Atlantic.
======================
Jane and Roderick had nineteen years together until he died. The church register records his death on the same page as his marriage, written by a different hand, as follows:
"Mr. McLennan died 3rd March 1847 in the 77th year of his age and the 51st year of his incumbency"
Two years after Roderick died, Jane packed up the family and set sail for Canada. The trip must have been an ordeal for a 49 year-old woman with 5 children, who had probably never been more than a few miles from home before. (I can only assume that all the children came with her. The eldest, Elizabeth, married in Scotland so she may have stayed, but the rest of the children were young and I could find no record of their deaths in Kintail church records).
Recorded accounts of trips similar to hers in sailing ships of the time describe journeys characterized by overcrowding, sickness, death, storms and hunger. She must have been an amazing woman. Thankfully they made it safely and settled in Durham, Ontario for 3 years before going to Paisley in Bruce County, Ontario. She remained there until she died on Dec 1, 1884 and is burined in Queen Hill Cemetary on Bruce Road 11 between Paisley and Port Elgin.19
